Saturday August 24, 1957

William Egbert (Colonel) was the last surviving male member ofa fami ly of nine boys and three girls born to James Seneca and MariaMcAfee Tyle r. The Tylers were one of the very early pioner families ofColumbus.

Mr. Tyler's grandmother was brought to Columbus at the age of5 in 18 17 by Alfred Kelley. His father was born on the site of Gayetythatre on S. High St.

He grew up in a brick home at 1107 Highland St. which hisfather won f or $2 with a lucky ticket.

As a young man, he worked for the Taylor Mantle company andset many of t he mantles of the city's old residences and the statehospital on W. Bro ad St.

In 1898 Tyler enlisted in the army and served two years in thePhilippine s, China, and Japan in the spanish american War.

He was honorably discharged under President McKinley as second lieutenanta nd soon returned to Columbus.

For several years he worked as clerk in the county courts andlater was a f oreman for the city street cleaning division. Some years agohe retired fr om being an employee at old Memorial Hall. since then heworked as a nig ht watchman for William-McNabb funeral Home.

He was a man of letters, and contributed letterss tonewspapers and was a f oriegn war correspondent while in the army. He alsoauthored numerous poems .Classical music wasanother love of Tyler's. Hewas a member of St. Phillip 's Episcopal Church for more than 50 years,Tyler at one time sang in the c hoir and served on the vestry.
