The Obituary PAUL EMERSON TYLER, age 92, of Lucy Depp Park, Powell. Ohio p
assed away peacefully Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at Mayfair Village Nursi
ng Care Center.
Paul was born February 9, 1908, in Columbus, Ohio, the second child of Wil
liam E. and Estella M. Tyler. He attend Columbus Public Schools, graduati
ng in 1925. He also attended The Ohio State University.
From his early youth, he had a love for music; studying violin for nine ye
ars and playing in the Jr. High City and Sr. High Orchestras, and also sin
ging in the Sr. High Glee Club. In his senior year, his father bought an a
lto saxophone to keep him from going out for football. He quickly master
ed this instrument subsequently, launching an accomplished musical caree
r, stretching from 1925-1964.
His career started in 1925 with the Camp Perry National Guard Band. From t
here, he went on to play in numerous orchestras including, the Virgil Watk
ins, Paul Craig, Capt. Wormac, John Henry, Sam Stewart, Tom Howard, Jim Ha
rrison, Earl Hood (along with Harry "Sweets" Edison), Clarence Olden, Emi
le Lem, and Raleigh Randolph Orchestras. In addition, he was musically act
ive as a member of the Second Baptist Church Senior Choir and Orchestra f
or a number of years.
In addition to his musical career, Paul worked and retired from the Jeffr
ey Manufacturing Company for thirty seven years and State Liquor Departme
nt for five years.
Paul Emerson Tyler is preceded in death by his parents; son, Paul, Jr.; da
ughter, Merlyn Price-Bey; and sister, Geraldine M. McCoy. He is surviv
ed by his devoted wife of sixty-five years, Dorothy E. Tyler; children, Em
ily (Don) Mixon of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Paula (Victor) Gay of Cincin
nati, Ohio, David Tyler of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren, four step-
grandchildren; four great grandchildren; ten step great grandchildren; spe
cial nephew, Malcolm (Beverly) McCoy; grand nieces and nephew; one great g
rand niece; and a host of other relatives and friends.
